Early language screening in Perth, Western Australia
The aim of the MELS© test is to identify pre-school children with communication difficulties as early as possible. Once identified, these children can receive timely intervention before dealing with the added demands of literacy.

Guidelines for scoring were developed after successfully trialing the MELS© on over 300 children attending Early Childhood Centres in WA.
Teachers in several WA schools have been using the MELS© successfully for early identification and as an evaluation tool for whole class intervention strategies.
Training in the administration of the MELS© can be undertaken by attending a workshop or by watching the training DVD.
