The aim of the MELS© test is to identify pre-school children with communication difficulties as early as possible. Once identified, these children can receive timely intervention before dealing with the added demands of literacy.
The MELS© assesses four sections;
- Speech / Articulation
- Comprehension/Problem Solving (Marion Blank Discourse Model Questions)
- Narrative Story Telling
- Pre-Literacy Skills
Guidelines for scoring were developed after successfully trialing the MELS© on over 300 children attending Early Childhood Centres in WA.
Teachers in several WA schools have been using the MELS© successfully for early identification and as an evaluation tool for whole class intervention strategies.
Training in the administration of the MELS© can be undertaken by attending a workshop or by watching the training DVD.
